Fall means a lot of things for us at TFAS, and one of the most exciting is: RECRUITMENT! In addition to attending many conferences held locally in DC, we spend a great deal of effort this time of year scouring the country for the best and brightest.
Here’s a snapshot of the exciting places we’ve been this year:
Starting in August and September, TFAS attended several conferences in Washington, DC, Virginia and Maryland:
- Delta Sigma Pi – Capitol Gaines Conference
- National Society of Collegiate Scholars Convention
- University of Maryland Career Fair
- University of Virginia Commerce School Career Fair and Volunteer Center
At the end of September, myself and Recruitment and Admissions Assistant, Haley Heieck, embarked on an exciting road trip to North Carolina, visiting six schools in only 4 days! Despite a small set back with a blown tire on the road (have you ever blown a tire on the highway? It’s pretty scary!) we made it to NC on time, with our first stop at Campbell University. Over our time there, we also visited:
- Duke University
- University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill
- NC State
- Meredith College
- Elon University
- Wake Forest University
During our time in North Carolina, we had the opportunity to speak with professors and students on each campus. We especially enjoyed seeing alumnus Melody Emami (J ’08), who spoke at our information session at UNC. Our NC recruitment trip also included a tour of Cameron Indoor Stadium at Duke, and a trip to Bojangles – a southern fast food chain with some of the best fried chicken I’ve ever eaten!
Just a few days after we returned from North Carolina, Recruitment and Admissions Coordinator Dana Faught headed down to one of our partner schools, Clemson University, in South Carolina. IBGA Professor Eric Daniels spoke at the information session, which was well attended by Clemson students. Dana also had the opportunity to go into Atlanta and visit Emory University.
October 8-14, Director of Recruitment and Admissions Mary Connell was in Southern California visiting partner school Chapman University and Loyola Marymount University. She also had the opportunity to meet with alumnus Mackenzie Burr (CSF ’08), who spoke at the information session on campus.
Our last big trip of the fall season was to the ACP/CMA Conference in Austin, Texas. Haley and Kerri DiNarda, Communications Coordinator, were able to meet aspiring journalists and talk about our programs. Conference participants were able to attend sessions discussing the trends in journalism as well as how social networking is changing the face of the profession.
With Philadelphia, Pennsylvania just a few hours outside the District, it’s always a great place for a road trip! Dana Faught traveled this past week to Drexel University, Temple University and the University of Pennsylvania. During her trip she was able to meet with alumnus Devin Griffin (E ’09) at Temple University.
Also in October, more conferences came to our area:
- University of Maryland Journalism Career Fair
- National Collegiate Honors Council Conference – Click here to read more
- Model UN Conference
As you can see, it’s been a whirlwind of a fall! We’re so excited about this generation of college students and are continually impressed by those we meet on college campuses. Where do you YOU think we should visit next year? Comment and let us know!
Upcoming recruitment events include:
- Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Conference – Alexandria, VA
- American Humanics Management Institute – Phoenix, AZ
