DC Summer Sports Scene

For most, summertime memories encompass everything from playing tag with your friends to having popcorn at a baseball game with your family. Luckily, summertime in DC is no different, and has a lot to offer an active intern.

From a casual pick-up game of kickball on the Mall, to watching professionals like Stephen Strasburg and Andy Roddick; DC has a little bit of everything for the summer sports fan.

DC Kickball: For those who haven’t lost their kickball abilities from when they were six, DC Kickball is the league for you. For summer and fall play it is important to register early, and while it is a bit pricey ($55) the cost includes at least 8 games of play, post-season play, a t-shirt, and social events throughout the season.

It’s a great chance to meet young people in the DC area!  http://dckickball.org/

Softball: Looking for some good old-fashioned co-ed softball? DC has numerous leagues usually affiliated with where you work, however there are a few leagues that you can sign up for individually such as DC Cityball (http://www.dccityball.com/). From nonprofit leagues to some government teams, the skill and competition level vary, but it’s all in good fun. Don’t forget to bring your mitt!

Legg Mason Tennis Classic: With the Finals being held in Rock Creek Park this weekend, August 7th and 8th, the Legg Mason Tennis Classic brings some of the best tennis players in the world to DC for a week every summer as a part of the professional nationwide tournament series leading up to the US Open in New York City.

Ticket minimum ranges from $5 on Family Day to $45 for Finals. It’s a great chance to see the likes of Lleyton Hewitt and Andy Roddick play. http://www.leggmasontennisclassic.com/

The Nationals:  While the Nationals might not be the best team in Major League Baseball they’re still fun to watch! Nationals Stadium is easily accessible by metro, located at the Navy Yard stop on the Green Line. With the recent acquisition of the young pitcher Stephen Strasburg, the Nationals are set to take on the National League. Join the excitement and get a ticket before the end of the regular season in early October. http://washington.nationals.mlb.com
