DC Intern Spotlight: Daniel Pitcairn

Internship: U.S. Department of State, Office of Security and Political Affairs in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs
University: Yale University

Daniel is interning with the Office of Security and Political Affairs in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs at the State Department. He assists the office in its mission to advance U.S. interests with regard to NATO, taking part in both administrative and policy-related work. When asked about his internship, Daniel said,

“It is an engaging and exciting place to be. I am learning about how American foreign policy is constructed, and I know that I will benefit greatly from this experience. As someone dedicated to pursuing a career in the Foreign Service or another field related to the development and execution of American foreign policy, I could not have asked for a better internship experience.”

At Yale, Daniel is the captain of the men’s club soccer team, a research assistant for the global affairs department, and a member of the Roosevelt Institute’s Center on Security and Foreign Policy. He spent a summer studying international institutions in Geneva, and in order to continue his studies he hopes to earn a master’s degree in international relations.

DC Intern Spotlight: Mallory Jones
Program: Engalitcheff Institute on Comparative Political and Economic Systems
Internship: United States Navy Memorial
University: Campbell University
Major: Political Science and International Relations
Hometown: Swansboro, North Carolina

Mallory comes to DC from a small town in North Carolina, and she is excited for the opportunity to work in this new and exciting city. Just this week Mallory was given the opportunity to attend one of the summer concerts hosted by her internship, the U.S. Navy Memorial. When asked about the event, Mallory stated,

“I was honored to have the chance to meet so many important people. The Secretary of the Navy, Admiral Ray Mabus, hosted the event, and it was very exciting to have a conversation with him. For a political science major like me, these people are celebrities!”

Mallory is entering her senior year at Campbell University where she is an officer of the College Democrats. In her free time she likes to pursue her musical interests. She loves to travel. This passion was discovered during a 2005 trip to London, Paris, and Rome, and she hopes to strengthen this passion by taking more international trips in the future.
