During the summer months over 40,000 interns descend upon the District of Columbia. The majority of these students are faced with the daunting task of setting strict summer budgets. Fortunately, Washington provides a variety of fun and free events for all to enjoy. DC interns keep the city humming by day, and these activities welcome young professionals after business hours.

Ongoing Summer Events:

1) Millennium Stage – Every night at 6:00pm, Kennedy Center

As part of the Kennedy Center’s “Performing Arts for Everyone” initiative, visitors can enjoy local, national, and international artists as they showcase their talents. Most of the performances take place in the Grand Foyer of the Kennedy Center, but some special events are hosted on the South Plaza Stage overlooking the Potomac River. Be sure to arrive early and grab good seats. Outside the Foggy Bottom metro stop is a bus that will take you directly to the Kennedy Center.

2) Capitol Riverfront Outdoor Movies– Thursdays at 8:45pm, Capitol Riverfront-Navy Yard

Every Thursday evening, Capitol Riverfront hosts a family-friendly outdoor movie, along with trivia and field games. This summer’s movie schedule is themed: “DC versus Marvel Comics”. The lineup features popular action-packed films such as “The Avengers” and “The Dark Knight Rises”.

In addition to these fantastic summer activities, interns can always take advantage of free admission to the Smithsonian museums, the National Zoo at Woodley Park, and tours of various government agencies. Having fun in DC doesn’t have to break the bank!
