Written by Ben Nuelle – Program Advisor, Institute on Political Journalism
In December 2013, my advisor at Northwest Missouri State University stopped me in the hallway and told me about the TFAS internship program in Washington D.C. I figured I might as well apply right? Two weeks later, I was accepted into the Institute on Political Journalism and my experience was one I will never forget.
Last summer, I interned for the Radio America Network and American Veterans Center. Every day I learned something new.
I had the opportunity to tour major broadcasting facilities, such as: C-SPAN, NPR, WTOP-FM, RFD-TV, and NBC’s “Meet the Press” just to name a few. I was able to meet many professionals in the field from NPR White House Correspondent Tamara Keith, to a local news reporter who is a TFAS alum.
One thing I would encourage students to do is get out of your comfort zone and meet as many people as you possibly can. You never know where the next road might lead by meeting someone while you are here. While your internship and classes will keep you busy, remember to make time for sight-seeing and making new friends!
